NYC football rankings: CHSFL fades awayBy FiveBoroSports.com November 16, 2008It’s been a tough couple of weeks for the Catholic league. First, Holy Cross was upset in the CHSFL ‘AAA’ quarterfinals, then Xaverian and Xavier fell in the ‘AAA’ and ‘AA’ semis. On championship Saturday, only the ‘A’ final will include city teams as Cardinal Hayes faces Cardinal Spellman, two programs new to our rankings. In the PSAL, the teams at the top – undefeated squads Port Richmond and Fort Hamilton – rolled and now sit atop the city.
Here is how our top 10 breaks down: 1. Port Richmond (11-0) (Last Week: 1) Talk about a well-oiled machine. The Red Raiders have scored 95 points in two playoffs games. Wasn’t it supposed to be harder to score in the postseason? Not for Port Richmond’s high-octane attack. Next: No. 7 Boys & Girls 2. Fort Hamilton (11-0) (4) Vinny Laino won back-to-back city championships in 2005 and 2006, but those teams were stacked with talent. This is a workmanlike bunch that executes on every play and never allows ego to get involved. The longtime coach deserves at least some of the credit. Next: No. 5 Wagner 3. Xaverian (7-4) (2) There was no shame in the Clippers losing to undefeated Iona Prep. Quarterback Najee Tyler went out slinging as usual, throwing two touchdowns passes and running for another. Next: Season Over 4. Xavier (8-2) (3) Xavier and Seamus Kelly may have fallen short Saturday, but it wasn’t the senior running back’s fault. He rushed for five touchdowns. If there were just a few more minutes left, the Knights might be preparing for the CHSFL ‘AA’ championships game. Next: Season Over 5. Wagner (7-4) (10) It’s easy to forget about Anthony Sama. He plays on Staten Island, home of the area’s best football, where talented running backs are plentiful. But this senior deserves to be right up there with the best of them. He owned the Falcons’ quarterfinals win over Clinton, and will likely be the key to another Wagner upset. Next: @ No. 2 Fort Hamilton 6. Holy Cross (6-5) (6) What a shame the Knights didn’t get a crack at St. Anthony’s. Instead Chaminade, which edged them last week, was blown out. Cross did beat St. Francis Prep, 21-7, in the consolation Bowl game. Next: Season Over 7. Boys & Girls (8-3) (NR) We were slow to come around to the Kangaroos. But later is better than never, right? Boys may be big underdogs against No. 1 Port Richmond, but if we learned anything this postseason, it’s that the unexpected can happen. Next: @ No. 1 Port Richmond 8. St. Joseph by the Sea (5-5) (8) We can’t wait to see Lyle McCombs and Andrew Armato a year from now. Those two will be quote a load for CHSFL opponents. Next: Season Over 9. Cardinal Hayes (4-5) (NR) Hayes sure can run the ball. Just ask Moore Catholic, which was blistered for 258 yards on the ground. Next: No. 10 Cardinal Spellman 10. Cardinal Spellman (5-5) (NR) The Falcons get another shot at bitter Bronx rival Hayes in the ‘A’ championship game Saturday. They have running Devon Osei, among others, to thank. He has 173 yards rushing and one touchdown. Next: @ No. 9 Cardinal Hayes New: Cardinal Hayes (4-5), Cardinal Spellman (5-5) and Boys & Girls (8-3) Dropped out: Fordham Prep (4-7), Clinton (8-3) and Sheepshead Bay (8-3) On the bubble: Fordham Prep (4-7), Mount St. Michael (4-7) Clinton (8-3), Sheepshead Bay (8-3), Curtis (8-2) and New Dorp (6-5) |
